ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Finalists, semi-finalists and dark horse named

Legendary Australian fast bowler Brett Lee believes the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will ultimately be won by either Australia or India, while also backing an exciting line-up of semi-finalists and highlighting a potential dark horse.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Cricket UAE Podcast, Brett Lee shared his insights in an exclusive conversation with Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of the Danube Group, popularly known as Mr Cricket UAE. The former World Cup winner offered a rare glimpse into how a champion cricketer reads a global tournament of this scale.

Australia vs India; and the final winner

When pressed to choose between Australia and India as the eventual champions, Lee admitted it was a difficult call but finally picked his home side.

“Look, it’s going to be one of two teams — Australia or India. You’ve got to pick one, and I know people won’t like it, but I’ll go with Australia,” Lee said.

He acknowledged that recent bilateral results, including Australia’s losses, do matter.

“People say momentum doesn’t matter, but of course it does. Momentum is everything — in sport and even in business. But mindset is equally important. World Cups are big stages, and Australia has traditionally performed well when it matters most.”

    Predicted semi-finalists and dark horse

Based on the current tournament structure and pool system, Lee named his four semi-finalists:

“With the pools in place, I’d go with India, Australia, England, and New Zealand,” he said.

He also hinted at Pakistan as a team capable of springing surprises.

“Man for man, Pakistan can beat any team in the world. Their biggest challenge is consistency. If they get that right, they’re incredibly dangerous.”

India vs Pakistan: Still biggest game?

Lee strongly believes an India–Pakistan clash will take place during the tournament and dismissed the notion that the rivalry has lost its edge.

“Let’s remove politics and look purely at cricket. On paper, India is the stronger side, but when passion, history, and pressure come into play, anything can happen. That’s why the whole world watches. The pressure is definitely there — especially on Pakistan.”

    Key players to watch

When asked about standout performers, Lee highlighted two Indian players as potential game-changers.

“I think Suryakumar Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy could be among the most valuable players of the tournament,” he said, adding that spin could play a decisive role given the conditions.

Advice for first-time World Cup bowlers

Sharing advice for young bowlers playing their first World Cup, Lee emphasized composure and clarity under pressure.

“In T20 cricket, you have more time than you think. Slow things down mentally. Have two or three clear delivery options you can execute under pressure — whether it’s a yorker, a slower bouncer, or a wide yorker. Don’t rush.”

The episode concluded with Lee thanking the hosts for the engaging discussion, calling it a pleasure to share his views ahead of one of cricket’s most anticipated global events.
