Gaya-born, Jamia alumnus Sohaib Khan earns spot in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

Words fall short to capture the pride and joy that have gripped Jamia Millia Islamia and the small town of Kothi, Imamganj in Bihar’s Gaya district.

Sohaib Khan, a talented cricketer from Sherghati, has been selected for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as part of the UAE team, historic achievement for him, his region, and his alma mater, Jamia.

The tournament, scheduled to be played in India from February 7, 2026, will see the UAE competing on the global stage. This marks only the second time in UAE’s cricketing history that the team has qualified for such a prestigious event. According to sports coach Md Monis, this milestone is the culmination of Sohaib’s years of dedication, perseverance, and unyielding passion for the game.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the trailblazing nature of Sohaib’s journey. He is only the second player from Bihar, after Ishan Kishan, to feature in a T20 World Cup, though while Ishan represents India, Sohaib will proudly don the UAE colours, putting his home state firmly on the international cricketing map.

Equally remarkable is his connection to Jamia Millia Islamia. Sohaib is only the second alumnus of the university, after the legendary Virender Sehwag, to reach this milestone. More impressively, he is the first-ever cricketer from Gaya district to play in an ICC T20 World Cup, inspiring countless young athletes in the region.

For Sohaib, this is more than a personal triumph; it is a collective celebration for his family, mentors, and the community that nurtured his talent, Monis noted. From the streets of Kothi and Imamganj to Hamzapur and Sherghati, people have rallied behind him, offering prayers, good wishes, and unwavering support. This pride extends beyond local borders, resonating with all who believe in dreams backed by hard work, faith, and determination.

As the countdown begins for the T20 World Cup, all eyes will be on Sohaib Khan as he takes the field, representing not only the UAE but also the spirit and resilience of his roots.

This is a moment of immense pride for Kothi, Imamganj, Gaya, Bihar, Jamia, and for every supporter who has cheered him on. Let us all wish Sohaib the very best as he embarks on this remarkable journey to shine on the world stage.
