Jamia pays tributes to Mahatma on his 153rd Birth Anniversary
Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) organised a number of programs today to celebrate 153rd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Officiating Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Shakeel inaugurated a Book Exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi at Dr. Zakir Husain Library of the university. Some personal letters, papers, and other archival material of Mahatma Gandhi, maintained by the Library are also on display in the exhibition to create more awareness and knowledge about him.
Prof. Shakeel presided over the main function at Dr Zakir Husain Library which included a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi by Prof. Farhat Nasreen, Kavita path by a student of Department of Hindi, group song by students of Faculty of Education, speech by a student of Department of Social Work and other cultural programs. The function was attended by senior officials including JMI Registrar Prof. Nazim Husain Jafri, Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof. Ibraheem, University Librarian Dr. Tariq Ashraf and a number of teaching & non-teaching staff of the university.
The function began with a welcome address by JMI Registrar Prof. Nazim Husain Jafri followed by an introductory remark by the DSW Prof. Ibraheem.
Prof. Farhat Nasreen, Head, Department of History, JMI delivered a lecture on ‘Mysticism and Mahatma Gandhi’. She argued that the Mahatma is strongly stationed in the category of mystics and visionaries who devote their lives for the betterment of others. She drew inspiration from the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi to underline the values of Humanity and Humanism that he stood for. It was noted that Gandhi ji always preached that we must take pride in our Nation and its priceless culture of Ahimsa and Truth.
A bibliography having a list of more than 1500 books on Mahatma Gandhi prepared by Dr. Zakir Husain Library was also released by the Offg. Vice Chancellor and other guests on this occasion.
The program ended with a vote of thanks proposed by University Librarian Dr. Tariq Ashraf followed by singing of the National Anthem by the gathering at the end.
Several other programs were also organised today and yesterday at the department level to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti . Department of Sociology, JMI organised an online lecture on “Sustainable Development Goals and the Gandhian Way” by Prof. Anand Kumar (Eminent Sociologist and Retired Professor, CSSS/SSS, Jawaharlal Nehru University on 1st October 2022. He spoke at length about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the significance of the Gandhian way in the achievement of the same. He discussed the social facets in contemporary society that would benefit from the vision of Gandhi regarding social, economic and ecological justice. He further spoke about the idea of responsibility and what it entailed in the context of health, education, consumption, production and international collaborations.
Mushir Fatma Nursery School, JMI celebrated Gandhi Jayanti with zest and zeal in the school premises. Several acts were put up by the tiny tots to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation. The acts of individual role play of Gandhi by a student depicting his life and his ideologies, rhyme on Gandhi by a group of students, three monkeys of Gandhi ji were explained through puppetry and a group dance in the remembrance of the great freedom fighter.
