A laptop bag was stolen from a parked Mahindra Thar after its window was smashed near the Batla House bus stand on Monday night, according to residents.

“An unknown person broke the car’s window and escaped with a bag containing valuable items, including a laptop. As soon as the owner saw the shattered glass, he immediately called the emergency helpline 112 to report the theft,” said Md Shagheer Abbasi, president of Samaj Sudhar Trust.

Abbasi narrated that the car owner and others searched for the missing bag for nearly an hour without success in Batla House. “Two hours later, the complainant received a call informing him that his bag had been spotted near ret ka tila in Abul Fazal Enclave, lying between a wall and some parked vehicles. The caller promised to hand over the bag at the local police station,” Abbasi said.

How the bag from Batla House ended up there still remains a mystery. Abbasi suggested that the thief might have assumed the bag was stuffed with cash. “When he broke into the car, Thar, and grabbed the bag, he probably thought it contained bundles of notes. But after opening it, he found only papers and a laptop. Realising it wasn’t worth the risk, he dumped it in Abul Fazal Enclave,” Abbasi told the OT.

A local resident who went to park his vehicle later discovered the abandoned bag wedged between a wall and parked cars, he said. On checking the documents inside, he found the owner’s contact number and immediately called to inform him. “The Thar owner was extremely lucky. He had had come from other State. Within just two hours of the theft, he got his bag back,” Abbasi said.

He also shared the story on social media by recording a video and interviewing the victim, helping spread awareness about the incident.

“Soon after, the man who found the bag handed it over to the police station. The car owner, accompanied by members of Samaj Sudhar Trust, reached the station where the recovered bag was inspected and returned. To everyone’s surprise, all belongings were intact — not a single item was missing. The swift recovery brought immense relief to the victim, who had feared losing important documents and his laptop,” he said.

Members of Samaj Sudhar Trust, who stood by the complainant throughout the ordeal, said the incident underscored the value of community vigilance and cooperation. They pledged to continue supporting residents in similar cases and to work actively for public welfare.
