Bilkis Bano, popularly known as daadi of Shaheen Bagh, has grabbed headlines once again. This time around the 82-year-old daadi has made it to the list of 100 most influential people for the year 2020 in the Time magazine.
She is one of the five Indians who made it to the list.
Shaheen Bagh was the epicenter of the anti- Citizenship Amendment Act protests. The protest went on for 101 days before it was cleared by the Delhi Police on March 24 to stop the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
“Bilkis, along with thousands of women who joined her in Shaheen Bagh, a neighborhood in New Delhi, became the symbol of resistance in a nation where the voices of women and minorities were being systematically drowned out by the majoritarian politics of the Modi regime,” writes journalist Rana Ayub in her note in Times on daadi of Shaheen Bagh.
“I will sit here till blood stops flowing in my veins so the children of this country and the world breathe the air of justice and equality,” Ayub recalls Bilkis telling her.
There were other women with Bano who braved chilling cold in Shaheen Bang protest site during the protest.
As the news surfaced, many Okhla residents shared daadi’s photo on their timeline.
