Jamia mourns death of SS Hakim, Olympian, legendary footballer
The death of Syed Shahid Hakim, 1960 Rome Olympian and national football coach, on Sunday at a hospital in Gulbarga is being mourned in Jamia Millia Islamia as for years he was sports advisor at the university.
Jamia hockey team coach Moonis, who worked with him, said it is a great loss to football world as he worked tirelessly to popularise the game across the country.
He was 82 years old and very recently had suffered a stroke after which he was admitted to a hospital in Gulbarga.
He played for India in the 1960 Olympics. Throughout his career he won several national awards, including Dronacharya Award. He was associated with Indian football for five-decade.
Hakim was a former Squadron Leader of the Indian Air Force.
