Shaheen Bagh youth poses as girl in virtual world, extorts money from many; arrested
In this digital age, at times netizens are unable to establish the identity of the person they are interacting with and hence fake accounts have mushroomed with scamsters and cheaters having a field day.
The case in point is a story reported in the media about a Shaheen Bagh resident, who was arrested, for allegedly extorting money from several people.
His modus operandi was simple: The 22-year-old youth opened an account on Instagram using girl photos and befriended many on the social media. According to police, he started chatting with them and then asked for their nude photos and once in possession he started blackmailing them. Had a Delhi resident, a victim, not filed a complaint, he would have a field day.
Police on Saturday said the accused has been identified as Aman, a resident of Saheen Bagh.
According to them, the matter came to light on Thursday with the complaint of a man, who said a woman he had met on social media had been blackmailing him with the nude pictures he had sent her.
The man said the woman started blackmailing him through WhatsApp and extorted Rs 21,600 in five different transactions, police said, reported PTI.
During investigation after his arrest, Aman told the police he had made an account on Instagram using photos of random girls and started sending requests to men and subsequently chatting with them.
Aman said he extorted money from several men using the same ruse, police said. He was found to have around Rs 33 lakh in his account, they added.
