144 legal notices issued in anti-mosquito drive
Amid possibility of spurt in vector-borne diseases due to the rise in temperature, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation said it has launched an intensive checking campaign against breeding of mosquitoes.
The civic agency has initiated an anti-larval drive to control larvae breeding in drains, water bodies, swamps and construction sites. Under the initiative, anti-larval spray will be done for a week, it said, adding that a total of 144 legal notices have also been issued against stakeholders including Delhi government’s Irrigation & flood Control Department, PWD, Delhi Jal Board, etc for mosquito breeding at their buildings/premises.
“Earlier all drains, institutions and construction sites were checked and it was reported that agencies responsible for desilting/removal of hyacinth and floating material from drains and water bodies have not completed the task of desilting and removal of hyacinth/floating material. During the drive, Culex mosquito breeding was found in pockets along edges of drains/water bodies which is causing Culex mosquito menace nowadays.
“In the public interest, it has been decided to intensify anti-larval spray along edges of drains and water bodies to destroy Culex mosquito breeding, it said.
In West and Najafgarh zones, NG cut Nallah and Najafgarh drain have been found major problem where high mosquito breeding were found and creating Culex mosquito menace for which 22 prosecutions have been done in last couple of months against AE & JE of Irrigation & Flood Control, it said.
In South zone, breeding was found at Shamshi pond Qutub Minar maintained by ASI, IGNOU campus, IIT Delhi campus, NCERT campus owned by CPWD, JNU campus and GK-1 & NRI colony Pump houses of DJB for which legal notice/prosecution was issued, it said.
In Najafgarh area, breeding was found in Dabri Nallah, Roshan garden drain, three ponds of Ghumanhera and Kapashera drain maintained by Irrigation & Flood Control department for which agency have been prosecuted. In Central Zone legal, notice against AE, PWD and JE, DJB were issued recently for mosquitogenic condition in Rajghat Nallah and reservoir DJB, it said.
