Jamia Teachers’ Association (JTA) wishes a very happy Teachers’ Day to every teacher of the nation. JTA appreciates the hard work and maintenance of consistent teaching-learning processes by each teacher amidst the toughest times of civilization in our times. On the eve of Teachers’ Day, JTA was about to honor 24 retired teachers; however, a scheduled function is postponed due to the national mourning of India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee’s sad demise. JTA, however, thanks all retired teachers with the highest gratitude and recognizes their selfless hard work and services rendered at the university to teach and train the children of India.

Remembering Dr. Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary, for his contribution towards higher education, JTA EC members appealed colleagues to teach students the ethics and moral values of Dr. Radha Krishnan,  said JTA Secretary Professor Majid Jamil.

JTA welcomes the move of the government of India by celebrating teachers’ day by following the hashtag(#) #ourteachersourheroes, #teachersfromindia. campaign on Twitter, Facebook, and social media to pay respect to teachers. JTA appeals to all teachers across the country to participate in the movement to make it globally visible.

JTA Executive Committee held a meeting on September 03, 2020, in which major points were discussed and resolved. The current year is a centennial year in which Jamia secured the first position in MHRD assessment. Also, Jamia impressively improved in International rankings. This is all because of the hard work of teachers, administration, students, and the staff.

Recognizing the contribution of teachers, administration, staff, and students, JTA EC expressed displeasure for many reasons. It was informed that teachers are in deep anguish because the government is continuously ignoring their genuine issues. It is sad to learn that Jamia Millia Islamia did not receive any centennial financial grant on the occasion of completing it’s successful and fruitful 100 years. It has been a practiced to award a special grant of rupees 100 crores for further strengthening the institute hitting a century. On this occasion teachers’ day, JTA requests Prime Minister for releasing 100 crore rupees grant for the infrastructure, academics, and research of the University.

The government should support the university in achieving national missions of education and research, and aid to further improve International standards and rankings. Also, JTA requests Prime Minister to favorably act on the long-pending requests of a medical college-hospital at Jamia Millia Islamia, and help to improve the national health sector besides helping in producing quality medical doctors.

A huge number of arrears and medical reimbursement bills of crores are in pending due to a long delay in the release of regular funds by the MHRD/UGC. Also, despite many requests and representations, the ministry has not reverted the New Pension Scheme (NPS) to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The revival of OPS would be a real tribute to the services of the teachers.

Jamia could not recruit around 250 teachers, guest/contractual faculties in the running session against vacant positions/specialized subjects, due to the financial crunch faced by the University. Because of these unforeseen circumstances, the Jamia administration had no other option except assigning teaching load to the research scholars. Such practice is not sustainable as it will adversely affect the quality of teaching and research progress of the fellows in the university. It might put an extra psychological burden on the Ph.D. students amid already spread corona crisis. JTA fears that it would affect student: teacher ratio and might cost the University’s rank ahead. JTA requests the ministry to release the due funds to Jamia Millia Islamia to appoint guest faculties and be sympathetic with young talent in teaching and research. We should consider providing more opportunities to such teachers who are unemployed despite earning Ph.D. Degrees and gaining excellent research experience. They are the true strength of India and just need an opportunity to serve the nation. JTA welcomes the decision of the Ministry of Education to allow the recruitment process in the universities and request Jamia Vice-Chancellor to start the process of recruitment of teachers at the earliest. JTA thanks the vice-chancellor, JMI on holding selection committees regularly and promoting teachers of the university.

JTA requests the government to immediately release the pending funds to help in meeting medical bills and normally run daily life of retired and serving teachers and reimbursement of multiple pending arrears related to the HRA, promotions, etc.

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, JTA requests national Mobile service providers to make available extra/free data of 10 GB/daily to the students to facilitate their online classes. These mobile data/service providing companies are encouraged to come forward in the testing times of global pandemics.

A two-minute silence was observed in memory of Bhratratana late Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India. JTA also sent condolence messages to the families of former colleagues Prof. Rahmat Ali, Prof. Mohd. Yasin, Prof. H. Y. Siddiqui, Prof. Abdul Moid Khan, and Dr. Sadiqua Zaki,  who recently passed away and appreciated their contributions to the building of Jamia Millia Islamia.
